Mindful of his mother's prophecy not to linger in the East, Merlin knows it is time to return to Britannia. He sells his business interests, bids farewell to his friends Empress Theodora and Emperor Justinian, makes Marika a gift of the Blue Dolphin and returns to Britannia with Captain Marius, landing at the port of Glevum. He buys a street of warehouses in Glevum and because of his political and business connections in the East, becomes the richest man in Britannia. But life as a merchant is not fulfilling. He marries Marcia the seamstress who has waited twelve years for him to return, participates in the Alleluia Victory over the Picts with Bishop Germanus, has a falling out with Vortigern the high king, raises a troop of cavalry and campaigns with Ambrose Aurelius and Uthor Pendragon who struggle to succeed Vortigern when he is murdered. When Marcia dies, Merlin falls in love with Elena, a slave who is captured by pirates and taken to Hibernia to be sold. Merlin raises an army and sails to Hibernia to rescue Elena with the help of a priest named Patricius. He becomes guardian of Uthor's young twins, Artorius and Morgana. But that is another story.
