With an Introduction and Notes by James Fowler, Senior Lecturer in French, University of Kent Voltaire is one of the three greatest French writers of the eighteenth century. He fought against religious persecution, bigotry and injustice throughout his life, and is one of the thinkers who prepared the way for the French Revolution. This volume contains: Zadig (1748), the story of a young man who becomes king of Babylon; Candide (1759), Voltaire's most famous tale of all; and (in a new translation by Editor James Fowler) The Ingenu (1767), in which the hero, raised by Huron Indians, discovers the ways of Europe. The heroes of these tales are young, handsome, talented, and naive. All three are animated by Voltaire's sparkling wit, but also by his dark satire of ancient regime society. The volume closes with a new translation of Nanine, Voltaire's three-act comedy which was seen, first as dangerously meritocratic, then as anti-revolutionary. The hero falls in love with a servant girl: but will he overcome society's prejudice and marry her?

The Man with the Twisted Lip
The Man with the Twisted Lip

«Человек с рассеченной губой» – один из самых захватывающих рассказов Артура Конан Дойла из цикла о Шерлоке Холмсе (1892 год). Как замечает сам Шерлок Холмс, в его практике не было случая, который на первый взгляд казался бы таким простым и был бы в действительности таким трудным. Текст незначительно сокращен и адаптирован, сопровождается комментариями, разными видами упражнений и кратким слова...

Dickens' Christmas Stories /
Dickens' Christmas Stories /

The book was written at a time when the British were examining and exploring Christmas traditions from the past as well as new customs such as Christmas cards and Christmas trees. Carol singing took a new lease on life during this time. Dickens' sources for the tale appear to be many and varied, but are, principally, the humiliating experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and...

Symposium and Phaedrus
Symposium and Phaedrus

It has been said that, after the Bible, Plato’s dialogues are the most influential books in Western culture. Of the dialogues, the Symposium is the most delightful and accessible, requiring no special knowledge of ancient Greek philosophy or customs. Dramatizing a party in fifth-century B.C. Athens, the deceptively unassuming Symposium introduces—in the guise of convivial after-dinner conversation...

Comedies (volume 2): The Merchant of Venice. The Merry Wives of Windsor. Much Ado About Nothing. As You Like It. Twelfth Night. All’s Well. That Ends Well. Measure for Measure

Shakespeare’s later comedies were written at the astonishing pace of about two plays a year. In them, he moves beyond the farce of his earlier comedies to richer and more varied dramas. These range from the famous “problem plays,” which blend humor with tragedy, to the idyllic romances set in such timeless locales as the Forest of Arden. They contain some of his wittiest and most memorable charact...

The Poems
The Poems

John Keats is regarded as the quintessential English Romantic poet: lyrical, passionate, tender, dreamy, sensuous. The only thing more miraculous than his brief career—in which, from the age of eighteen until his death a mere seven years later, he produced a substantial number of the greatest poems in English—are those poems themselves. Nowhere has the pressure of human imagination been brought m...
