These stories (and stories within stories, and stories within stories within stories), told by the Princess Shahrazad under the threat of death if she ceases to amuse, first reached the West around 1700. They fired in the European imagination an appetite for the mysterious and exotic which has never left it. Collected over centuries from India, Persia, and Arabia, and ranging from vivacious erotica, animal fables, and adventure fantasies to pointed Sufi tales, the stories of The Arabian Nights provided the daily entertainment of the medieval Islamic world at the height of its glory.
The present new translation by Husain Haddawy is of the Mahdi edition, the definitive Arabic edition of a fourteenth-century Syrian manuscript in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, which is the oldest surviving version of the tales and is considered to be the most authentic. This early version is without the embellishments and additions that appear in later Indian and Egyptian manuscripts, on which all previous English translations were based. Книга «The Arabian Nights: I» оценена посетителями КнигоГид, и её читательский рейтинг составил 8.00 из 10.

It has been said that, after the Bible, Plato’s dialogues are the most influential books in Western culture. Of the dialogues, the Symposium is the most delightful and accessible, requiring no special knowledge of ancient Greek philosophy or customs. Dramatizing a party in fifth-century B.C. Athens, the deceptively unassuming Symposium introduces—in the guise of convivial after-dinner conversation...

Begun as a collection of anecdotes for his son, the memoir grew into a history of his remarkable achievements in the literary, scientific, and political realms. Now recognized as one of the nineteenth century’s leading psychologists and philosophers, Kierkegaard was among other things the harbinger of exisentialisim. In Fear and Trembling he explores the psychology of religion, addressing the question ‘What is Faith?’ in terms of the emotional and psychological relationship between the individual and God. But this difficult question is addressed in the mo...
Edgar Allan Poe’s gift for the macabre–his genius in finding the strangeness lurking at the heart of things–was so extraordinary that he exerted a major influence on Baudelaire and French symbolism, on Freudian analysis, and also on the detective novel and the Hollywood movie. His psychologically profound stories of encounters with the marvelous, the uncanny, and the dreadful represent–in contrast...
Shakespeare’s later comedies were written at the astonishing pace of about two plays a year. In them, he moves beyond the farce of his earlier comedies to richer and more varied dramas. These range from the famous “problem plays,” which blend humor with tragedy, to the idyllic romances set in such timeless locales as the Forest of Arden. They contain some of his wittiest and most memorable charact...

In these two historical tales of the Scottish lowlands in the eighteenth century, Robert Louis Stevenson brought to the novel of adventure a psychological sophistication it had never before possessed – a subtlety that, far from impeding the action, everywhere intensifies its speed and credibility. A double demonstration of Stevenson’s ability to satisfy the highest critical standards and at the sa...
John Keats is regarded as the quintessential English Romantic poet: lyrical, passionate, tender, dreamy, sensuous. The only thing more miraculous than his brief career—in which, from the age of eighteen until his death a mere seven years later, he produced a substantial number of the greatest poems in English—are those poems themselves. Nowhere has the pressure of human imagination been brought m...
