Edward Frederick Benson (1867-1940) was the son of an Archbishop of Canterbury. He wrote over a hundred books during his lifetime, including the extremely successful Mapp & Lucia novels. It was his ghost stories for which he was best known in his day, and which represent probably his best writing.
For the first time, these stories are reprinted in one volume, bringing together material that has not been available for over 40 years.
His stories are extremely varied in content, ranging form the horror of vampires, homicidal ghosts and monstrous spectral worms and slugs (appearing in the classic Negotium Perambulans and And No Bird Sings) to the satire of humorous tales which poke fun at charlatan mediums and fake seances (Spinach and Mr Tilley's Seance).
All his ghostly writings are united by his unfailing ability to create a thoroughly eerie atmosphere and his graceful literary style. These are the works of a true master of the genre.
